The filmstrip was a common form of still image instructional multimedia, once commonly used by educators in primary and secondary schools (K-12), overtaken at the end of the 1980s by newer and increasingly lower-cost full-motion videocassettes and later on by DVDs. From the 1940s to 1980s, filmstrips provided an easy and inexpensive alternative to 16 mm educational films, requiring very little storage space and being very quick to rewind for the next use. Filmstrips were large and durable, and...

In February of 2016, the people behind the website Government Attic made an unusual Freedom of Information Act request to the National Security Agency: "A digital/electronic copy of the NSA's old security posters from the 1950s and 1960s." It took more than two years, but the NSA finally got around to honoring the request—providing digital images of more than 100 posters from NSA's Security Education Program, spanning from the agency's early days in the 1950s up to the 1970s (with...

This book takes a single line of code--the extremely concise BASIC program for the Commodore 64 inscribed in the title--and uses it as a lens through which to consider the phenomenon of creative computing and the way computer programs exist in culture. The authors of this collaboratively written book treat code not as merely functional but as a text--in the case of 10 PRINT, a text that appeared in many different printed sources--that yields a story about its making, its purpose, its...

From Wikipedia: Antic was the name of a home computer magazine devoted to the Atari 8-bit computer line (Atari 400/800 and compatibles). Its ISSN is 0113-1141. It took its name from the ANTIC chip which produced the Atari line's graphics. The first issue was published in April 1982. While it began as a bimonthly magazine, within a year it had gone monthly. The last issue was in June/July 1990. All told, 88 issues were published. A "Best of" book was also published. Its main rival in...

This is the first of several high-level political analyses motivated by a need to better understand the politics that led to both the JFK assassination and the Nixon Watergate Affair. It deploys as the primary theoretical model, C. Wright Mills "Theory of the Power Elite" and the framework in Carroll Quigleys book "Tragedy and Hope." With these tools, Carl Oglesby posits an interesting thesis: that JFKs assassination, instead of being a random act by a lone nut was in fact a...

MacWeek was an astonishingly accomplished early Macintosh e-zine. And I'm not kidding when I say "early"; issue 1 was published in November 1986! Published in μFilm (pronounced microfilm) format, MacWeek was the work of Jerry Daniels and his wife. Information about the publication is scarce on the web, and somewhat drowned out by search matches for the later (unrelated other than that the name was purchased from Mr Daniels) print publication MacWEEK, but I quote from an article at...

Diplomacy is a strategic board game created by Allan B. Calhamer in 1954 and released commercially in 1959. Its main distinctions from most board wargames are its negotiation phases (players spend much of their time forming and betraying alliances with other players and forming beneficial strategies) and the absence of dice and other game elements that produce random effects. Set in Europe before the beginning of World War I, Diplomacy is played by two to seven players, each controlling the...

ABSTRACT When a frequently-accessed cache item expires, multiple requests to that item can trigger a cache miss and start regenerating that same item at the same time. This phenomenon, known as cache stampede , severely limits the performance of databases and web servers. A natural countermeasure to this issue is to let the processes that perform such requests to randomly ask for a regeneration before the expiration time of the item. In this paper we give optimal algorithms for performing such...

D.O.A. (1950) is a film noir drama film directed by Rudolph Maté, considered a classic of the stylistic genre. The frantically-paced plot revolves around a doomed man's quest to find out who has poisoned him – and why – before he dies. The film begins with a scene called "perhaps one of cinema's most innovative opening sequences" by a BBC reviewer. The scene is a long, behind-the-back tracking sequence featuring Frank Bigelow (O'Brien) walking through a hallway into a police...

The typical pulp magazine was seven inches wide by ten inches high, half an inch thick, and 128 pages long. Pulps were printed on cheap paper with ragged, untrimmed edges. The name pulp comes from the cheap wood pulp paper on which the magazines were printed. Magazines printed on better paper were called...

Winslow Homer was and still is considered one of the greatest masters of watercolor for his intuitive understanding of this liquid medium. He produced a large body of works in watercolor (about double the number of oil paintings), many of which remain unrivaled in their expressive power. In this picture of remote fishing grounds in Florida, he captured the tropical landscape on an overcast day with a complex combination of freely brushed, liquid washes and dry strokes of paint (to articulate...

KXJZ's Acid Jazz draws from a rich palate of soulful and improvisational sounds, encompassing pioneering soul/jazz artists of the 60's & 70's along with the progressive vision of today's contemporary masters, such as DJ Logic, Charlie Hunter and Jazzanova. There's also a rich cross pollination with genres such as electronica, house, reggae, and classic R&B. Acid Jazz is a soulful, mind-expanding experience!
